TurboTax could be giving you a refund, and it's not from the IRS. The company that owns TurboTax, Intuit, was ordered to pay $141 million to customers because of misleading claims of the tax preparation service being free of charge. The "free, free, free" advertising campaign will be suspended, and 4.4 million taxpayers will be eligible to get their money back.
A report found that Intuit knowingly deceived customers into using TurboTax services that weren't free to everyone. Users that filed for tax years 2016 through 2018 and had to pay to file even though they were eligible for the IRS Free File program will be compensated $30 for each year they used the service.
If you're in this group, you'll need to do nothing. You should receive a notice and compensation by mail.
