A hero in more ways than one! Australian actress Ruby Rose has just been cast as the titular heroine--who will be gay--in The CW's upcoming series Batwoman. EW notes that it'll be the first TV show in history to focus on an LGBT superhero. The character will first be introduced in the network's annual DC crossover event this winter before producers develop her own standalone series. The 32-year-old Rose, who is likewise openly gay, first gained major fame in the U.S. thanks to her role as Piper's love interest Stella Carlin on the Netflix dramedy Orange Is the New Black. The news also follows The CW's casting earlier this summer of trans actress Nicole Maines as a trans superhero on the next season of Supergirl.
This feels like a spot on casting choice!
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.
