Empire star Jussie Smollett was reportedly attacked in a possible hate crime early Tuesday by a pair of assailants spouting "Make America Great Again" rhetoric. According to TMZ, the 35-year-old was leaving a Subway sandwich shop in Chicago around 2 a.m. when someone stepped to him and asked, "Aren't you that fa**ot Empire n**ger?" (The openly gay Smollett also plays a gay character on the series.) That's when the two attackers, believed to be white men wearing ski masks, beat up Smollett, poured bleach on him, put a noose around his head and yelled, "This is MAGA country." Smollett reportedly fractured a rib and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but has already been discharged. Police are investigating the attack, believed to be premeditated, as a possible hate crime. Meanwhile, TMZ has published pics of a letter that was allegedly sent to FOX Studios in Chicago (where Empire is shot) that reads, "You will die, black f**."
