Keeping kids indoors and away from others during the pandemic is a great way to prevent them from contracting coronavirus, but it could be weakening their immune systems. According to The New York Times, it's actually healthy for kids to encounter bacteria and viruses, as the microbes help develop and strengthen their immune systems. Exposure to pathogens teaches their bodies how to recognize and fight those same pathogens should they encounter them again later on in their life. Research has also shown that when it comes to developing immunity, cleanliness and isolation aren’t key and can even lead to higher rates of allergies and autoimmune diseases amongst children who are too sheltered. But don't worry too much; experts say immunity is largely shaped by genetics.
