The FDA gave full approval to Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine on Monday for people 16 years and older. The Pfizer vaccine still has emergency authorization for 12 to 15-year-olds. The approval may help give the public more confidence in taking the vaccine shot in order to battle the most contagious coronavirus mutation. The Pfizer vaccine will now be marketed as Comirnaty.
According to the acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, "The public can be very confident that this vaccine meets the high standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality the FDA requires of an approved product," and "Today's milestone puts us one step closer to altering the course of this pandemic in the U.S."
Pfizer and Moderna are both still studying the vaccine for children under the age of 12. Data expected in the fall.
