3 mothers and 6 children including babies were killed in Mexico while traveling between the states of Sonora and Chihuahua Monday evening. The group was ambushed by criminal groups and the women and children between the ages of 14 years old and 10 months were massacred and burned alive. 7 other children were injured and have been flown from Mexico to Douglas, Arizona for transport to a hospital.
The victims were members of a Mormon community in Mexican state of Sonora. Family member Alex LeBaron said all nine were dual US-Mexican citizens. Family members suspect that the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity by the drug cartel.
