YUCK! Possible Outbreak Of A Deadly Bacteria In The Santa Ana Riverbed

Press Release

The Santa Ana River Trails & Recreation Areas and Downy Park are Closed until Further Notice on THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 2019

Downey Park and all access point to the Santa Ana River are closed under the direction of the County Environmental Health and Disease Control Department due to a possible outbreak of the Shigella Bacteria in the riverbed. This bacteria has caused an estimated 600,000 deaths worldwide annually. This disease is more common in young children and complications from Shigella could include blood poisoning infections in the human body. Our Park Rangers are now in the process of closing our City Park and posting the necessary placards/signs that will notify the public of this condition. The County staff will commence their testing of the Santa Ana River in order to confirm or not the existence of this bacteria. To date, 6 patients have tested positive for this bacteria in our county. The City Park at Downy will remain closed until further notice from the County.

The Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Department along with the City of Jurupa Valley Code Enforcement Officers and Park Rangers will be working together to notify homeless individuals as well as providing assistance as needed.

For more information, contact the City of Jurupa Valley Code Enforcement Department at (951) 332-6464 or email: isalas@jurupavalley.org(Irwin Salas, Senior Code Enforcement Officer)

DO NOT ENTER THE SANTA ANA RIVER AT ANY LOCATION UNTIL THE AREA HAS BEEN CLEARED FOR USE.
