Supreme Court Upholds DACA, Protecting "Dreamer" Immigrants

The Supreme Court says the Trump administration can't abolish DACA, an Obama-era program that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. CNN reports that Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote the 5-4 majority opinion upholding DACA, which was joined by the Court's four more liberal justices. Late last year, it had seemed that the Court's conservative majority was ready to allow the Trump administration to abolish DACA, with Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh among those who seemed to accept the administration's rationale for ending the program. DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, protects people brought to the U.S. as children by letting them seek temporary status to shield themselves from deportation and allows them to work, but does not provide a path to citizenship. The Supreme Court decision rules that the process by which Trump tried to rescind DACA was unlawful, but leaves open the possibility of doing it another way in the future.
