As the tax deadline looms, the Federal Trade Commission promises you that the IRS is NOT trying to call, email or text you... but scammers posing as tax collectors are.
The FTC says more than 75,000 victims have lost $28 million to scammers impersonating the IRS over the phone, email, texts and more since 2018.
Scammers often try to scare their victims into believing they owe the IRS money or face jail, driver's license revocation or even home foreclosure.
The IRS usually sends out several letters to tax payers before they actually do call, so if you get a scammer claiming that you owe them taxes, report the call at IRS.gov.
