Mosquitoes in Michigan tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus, which in the most serious cases, can cause encephalitis or meningitis. West Nile has also been detected in mosquitos found in Texas and Indiana.
To avoid mosquitos, it's recommended that you:
- Limit time outside when mosquitos are most active, at dawn and at dusk
- Use screens on your windows and doors
- Don't forget the bug spray!
- Reduce the mosquito population by avoiding standing water in items like dog bowls and flower pots
